What’s so special about the alpaca fiber?
Alpaca incorporates the finest features of the world’s natural fibers.  The first cousin of the Llama, Alpacas are native to the Andes Mountains in Peru, and are 80% of the total population of Alpacas in the world.  They are found at high altitudes of about 12,000 to 15,000 feet in the Peruvian Mountains.  In adapting to the extreme temperatures of its native Andes, the alpaca developed fleece with unique thermal properties.  It has a hollow, insulation core that gives alpaca fiber a smooth, velvety hand and cloud-weight softness.  In addition, yarns made for alpaca fleece are stronger than ordinary yarn and resist soiling, staining and pilling.  Because an alpaca’s coat does not have natural oils, its fleece is less likely to have the characteristic ” itchiness” of ordinary wool and is more likely to be hypo-allergenic.  Its softness to the touch is the reason the feel of alpaca is often compared to the feel of cashmere.  Color is another natural advatage of alpaca fiber.  While most animal fibers are one color, alpacas produce fleece in an amazing range of 22 colors.
